Top 3 Business Travel Beauty Accessories for Female Fashionistas

Tuesday, 10 November 2009

Ladies, let me preface this by saying I do not pack light. Not for planes, trips to the mall, a day at the office, anything. I like big bags, and I like to be prepared. That said, checking baggage is a huuuuge pain, and something my dear fiance is practically allergic to. And really, he’s right, especially when traveling for business. Trips aren’t usually that long, time is money, and you need to look your best at all times; you can’t afford to be stuck in one wrinkled outfit because the airline lost your bag.

In an effort to turn into a carry-on queen, I’ve made lists and researched the best packing methods. And thanks to my tireless efforts and dedication to all types of shopping, I’ve found three of the most indispensible travel accessories, for business, pleasure, or a little of both.

Sally Hansen Color Quick Fast Dry Nail Color Pen

I have yet to find a manicure that can survive high altitudes and major keyboard tapping intact. But nail polish is messy, and often too bulky to fit in my precious liquids Ziploc bag. I was scouring (in vain) the makeup aisle of CVS for some mini polishes when I noticed Sally Hansen’s paint pen. I had dismissed it on earlier excursions for regular nail polish, but in my desperation, I decided to give it a shot. And I’m so glad I did. While the idea of markering on nail color seemed doomed to look awful, this actually glides on smooth, just like a traditional brush, and really does dry super fast; I was typing just moments after applying without a scratch. It’s perfect for touch-ups or on-the-go manicures, and while it is still considered a liquid, it comes in a  plastic case, as opposed to the more risky glass, and its long, thin shape fits nicely in any toiletry bag.

Aveda Pure Abundance Voluminzing Hair Potion

Besides the fact that Aveda is the only company able to tame my not-quite-curly, not-exactly-straight hair, and that everything they make smells amazing, there are two huge benefits to this hair potion. One, it’s a powder. Hello, more room for lip gloss! I successfully went through security with a bottle of this in my carry on without a second look. The second best thing about it? It soaks up oil, without making your hair look dull, so you can squeeze one more day out of your ‘do. Which, on a business trip, could mean time saved in the morning, or space saved for short trips that no longer require shampoo.

Sephora Samplers

If you travel a lot, or just want to save the time and hassle of checking bags, learn to love things in miniature. Trial and sample sized products are a business traveler’s best friend. CVS and Target have many standard brands available in carry on approved sizes, pre-portioned for your convenience. But if you’re like me, you probably have some favorite, more specialized products that you simply can’t live without for even a few days. Enter Sephora, the beauty and cosmetics giant who now offers a wealth of designer sampler sets that include high-end beauty products in small sizes. I love the lip gloss and mascara versions, because they allow you to try new brands without any major commitment, but the fragrance packs may offer the best value-$50 for a set of samples, and a voucher for a free full size bottle of your fave from the bunch. These are great to throw in a gym bag or purse, but are absolutely perfect for planes, and the easiest way to bring your signature scent or lip stain wherever you go.

Also, if you didn’t know, these packing tips came from my real experiences of gearing up for PubCon Las Vegas, so if you’re at the conference be sure to come see me speak on Thursday! You can also check out how my manicure is holding up.

  • I travel a lot and the hardest thing is getting all my beauty supplies on one little carry on-though I valiantly try :) . Thanks for these beauty travel ideas. I specially appreciate the Aveda Volumizing potion & the Sephora sample size tip.
